Sustainable Bamboo FAQs

What makes bamboo more sustainable?

Bamboo can be harvested up to 20 times in the amount of time needed for just one harvest of some common hardwoods. Bamboo release 35% more oxygen into the atmosphere than comparably-sized stands of trees and some of the over 1500 types of bamboo can sequester up to 12 tons of carbon dioxide from the air per hectare

What are the things to look for in bamboo flooring or other products?

Mature harvest bamboo - bamboo should be harvested every 5-6 years in order to maintain the health of the grove to continue to produce many generations of plants without replanting.

Low or No VOC - VOC are "volatile organic compounds" which are chemical compound particles that get vaporized into the air through normal conditions and can be dangerous to our health. Hydrocarbons as well as common additives in adhesives or solvents like formaldehyde are VOC. Bamboo products should, at minimum, meet the strict European E1 standards for indoor air quality.

What are some unique characteristics of flooring made from bamboo?

Bamboo can be up to twice as hard as oak in products made from the bamboo strands that are woven together into a solid product. Bamboo resists moisture and has natural anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties.
